The #1 Eating Mistake That's Secretly Sabotaging Your Digestion.

What if I told you there's a single, tiny change you can make to the way you eat that can dramatically improve your health, increase your energy, and help cure disease? It’s a secret so simple, yet so powerful, that its absence is, in my opinion, one of the primary reasons for the explosion of digestive illnesses in our modern world.

This secret has nothing to do with what you eat, but everything to do with how you eat. It all comes down to one incredible, life-giving fluid: your saliva.

Saliva: The First and Most Important Stomach

We think of digestion as something that happens deep inside our stomach. But the most critical stage of digestion happens before your food ever gets there. It happens in your mouth.

Your saliva is not just water. It is a potent cocktail of powerful enzymes designed to begin breaking down your food, separating its constituents, and preparing it for the rest of its journey. I believe that only the food that has been properly digested by your saliva can be properly digested by your stomach.

If food bypasses this crucial first step and enters your stomach without being mixed with saliva, it becomes a problem. It turns into bad food, a waste matter that can create disease. The secret to good health is ensuring that every single bite you take is thoroughly bathed in this magical fluid.

The Hidden Enemy Inside Your Mouth

"But I do mix saliva with my food," you might say. I am willing to bet that most of us are not, at least not properly. And the reason is simple: we chew with our lips open.

What is the difference between chewing with your lips open versus closed? The difference is everything. Imagine your food is one ball, and your saliva is another. When you chew with your lips open, you allow an enemy to enter your mouth: air.

This air gets between the food and the saliva. It forms a barrier, preventing them from mixing properly. It actively sabotages the first and most important stage of digestion.

Therefore, from this moment on, I urge you to follow this one simple rule. Open your lips only to put food inside your mouth. Once the food is inside, your lips must remain closed until you swallow.

A conceptual diagram showing how chewing with open lips allows air to block digestion, while closed lips allow saliva and food to mix perfectly.

A Surprising Global Observation

Have you ever noticed that the prevalence of diseases like diabetes seems to be much lower in Western countries like the USA, the UK, or Italy? Now, observe how people from these countries eat. You will almost always see them chewing their food with their lips closed.

In countries where it is more common to eat with the lips open, such as India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, the rates of sugar disease are much higher. I do not believe this is a coincidence.

Now, this isn't to say one group is "smarter" than the other. It's interesting to note that in countries where people have this healthy physical habit, they often seem to have more mental illnesses. It's as if in some parts of the world, the body is healthy but the mind is not, and in other parts, the mind is healthy but the body is not. The drug companies seem to be doing good business everywhere! But we can learn from this simple physical observation.

Faster, Easier, and Infinitely Better

You might think that chewing with your lips closed will take more time. In fact, it takes far less.

Try this experiment. Put a piece of roti or bread in your mouth and chew it 40 times with your lips open. It will likely remain a lumpy, solid piece. Now, try another piece. Chew it just four or five times with your lips closed. You will find it almost instantly becomes a smooth, liquid paste that slides down your throat without any effort.

When the enemy called air is not present, the saliva can do its job instantly and efficiently.

Now, there may be a small complication. When you first start this new habit, your jaw might feel a little sore for about a week. This is normal; you are using your muscles in a way you haven't for decades. But after a week, the pain will vanish, and you will have unlocked a secret to a lifetime of better health. This is the second most important principle of our treatment: whatever you eat, once it's in your mouth, keep your lips closed until you swallow.
