The Ancient Secret to Perfect Sleep: Why Sleeping While Sitting is Better for You

Today, let's reflect on the idea of sleeping while sitting.

What do I mean by this? The ancient sages and wise ones always slept sitting up. I have come to believe that sleeping in an upright position is far superior to lying down. Let’s explore why this simple change can have a profound impact on your health.

For anyone who struggles with hair loss, chronic headaches, or a dependency on sleeping pills, I want you to try this. Just try sleeping while sitting up, and you might find these problems begin to resolve themselves.

What is the real cause of hair loss? It's the absence of peaceful sleep. What is the root of a headache? It's the absence of peaceful sleep. And why do people take sleeping pills? It’s because they can’t find that peaceful, deep sleep. To get out of this cycle, I believe that the practice of sleeping while sitting is an excellent exercise.

The Four Pillars of Deep Sleep

At night, we typically lie down to sleep. But when we do this, it can actually take a very long time for our bodies to truly enter a state of deep, restorative rest. Sleeping while sitting, on the other hand, allows you to get there much faster.

In my view, for a person to achieve what we call "deep sleep," four specific things must happen within the body:

  1. Complete Digestion: The food you ate for dinner must be fully digested.

  2. Organized Intellect: The thoughts and intellect, which are scattered throughout the day, must be properly organized and settled.

  3. Calm Mind: The mind, which is often agitated and restless during the day, must be brought to a state of peace.

  4. Optimal Body Temperature: The body's internal temperature must stabilize at around 37 degrees Celsius.

Only when these four conditions are met can you truly experience the profound, healing state of deep sleep. This is the kind of sleep that stops hair loss, eliminates the need for sleeping pills, and can even help heal issues like brain tumors, strokes, and Parkinson's disease.

Why Lying Down Takes So Long

So, how do we achieve this state? When we lie down, it can take up to five hours for all four of these processes to complete.

Think about it. If you go to bed at 10 PM, your body might only enter a state of true deep sleep around 3 AM. By then, the night is almost over, and soon it’s time to wake up. Is it any wonder why we haven't experienced truly restful sleep in years? The problem, as I see it, is that we are lying down. It simply takes too long.

But when you sleep sitting up, I’ve found that these four processes can be completed in as little as half an hour. For some, it might take 45 minutes or an hour, but it won't take longer than that.

How to Practice Sleeping While Sitting

This isn't a complex technique. When you are ready for bed, instead of lying down, simply sit up comfortably. It could be on your bed or in a chair. Just sit normally and close your eyes.

As you sit there quietly, your body will eventually give you a signal. It will give a little jerk or a twitch, a movement beyond your control. That is your sign.

When your body jerks for the third time, it means you have entered the initial stage of deep sleep. At this point, you can gently lie down and continue sleeping. The rest of your sleep will be profoundly deep and restorative. You'll find you have no dreams.

The Truth About Dreams

Many sources will tell you that dreaming is a good thing, a sign of REM sleep. I completely disagree. A dreamless sleep is the best sleep.

Why do we dream? It’s because the mind and the intellect are still unsettled and fighting for dominance. That conflict is what creates dreams. When you sleep deeply, the mind is at peace, and there are no dreams. The sages and wise ones never dreamed because they were in a state of deep, calm rest.

Putting It Into Practice

From now on, I encourage you to stop just lying down. Practice sleeping while sitting.

When you feel the three jerks, you know it's time. You can then lie down and get a full night's rest in just four hours. Imagine going to bed at midnight, and by 4 AM, you are fully rested and refreshed. You will save so much time.

But remember, don't try to cheat the process. Don't sit in the living room, wait for the jerks, and then get up, walk to the bedroom, turn off the lights, and use the restroom. The moment you get up and move, you will break the state of sleep.

You must do this in the place where you intend to sleep. Take care of everything else first—turn off the lights, drink your water, use the restroom. Then, sit down and begin.

This is the power of sleep. It is a medicine that billions of dollars cannot buy. Let's learn this practice of sleeping while sitting and live a truly healthy life.
